Synopsis
In Mexico, a lawyer gets an unexpected offer to help a terrified cartel boss out of his business and disappear forever, becoming the woman he’s always wanted to be. (2024). El Trio Written by Camilla, Clement Dicol and Jacques Audiard Performed by Carla Sophie Gascon, Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana. A thoroughly entertaining film with two demanding leads and two supporting roles that require excellent actors. The first two are played by Zoe Saldaña and Carla Sofia Gascón, the second by Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz.
You deserve it
Saldaña, in particular, is a revelation from writer-director Jacques Audiard’s previous films (A Beat My Heart Skipped, The Prophet, The Taste of Rust and Bone, and Brothers and Sisters), each memorable in its own way. . None of them prepared me for this one, so hats off to him for not getting stuck in a genre rut. Emily Perez has a lot of stories and a lot to offer singing.
Otherwise, the songs drag the film down
When the singing is combined with Damien Gillett’s laconic choreography, the effect is exhilarating. They are musically light, do not go deep and therefore do not meet the dramatic demands placed on them. They are at their best in rap-oriented numbers where the beat is the most important element. The moral of Emily Perez seems to be that we can never let go of the past, change who we are or what we want.
