Filmmaker Kazuhiro Soda observes their coexistence
Synopsis
A colony of cats inhabits a Shinto shrine. The residents look after themselves, others are disturbed by the disorder.
It is, of course, undeniable that dogs are superior to cats
The serious programmer, who presented the UK premiere of this documentary at the 2024 London Film Festival, repeatedly used the phrase “non-human animals” – wokism is entering the animal kingdom! But director Kazuhiro Sôda was a lovely guy, taking a selfie with the audience – which distracted from his promising claim that he had worked without research…
We see them being fed by caring humans, being caught for “neutering,” sharing food with their kittens, etc
However, even non-cat fans are likely to be enchanted by the cats that inhabit the Shinto shrine in a small Japanese coastal town. But this is not the case with all cats: humans are there too, for example at a lengthy committee meeting or cleaning up after a typhoon.
Can we really say that what we see is accurate?
The problem with making such an “observation film” is the low probability that the people a camera is pointing at are actually behaving as they normally do. So to what extent is the documentary maker changed by the simple fact of their presence?
But in portraying a slice of Japanese life, the film is worth watching at least once
